Ivory is like cocaine to Americans

Ivory carving is an ancient art.
As an artistic passion it ranks in the top five in China that include calligraphy, art, jade and pottery.

Of course its passion for ivory is different from American yearning for cocaine and crack. We call that criminal drug addiction.

Ivory carving is not criminal.

It is the killing of pachyderm that is, as in the case of King Juan Carlos of Spain.

The world needs to find a compromise re how to save the species and yet by the processes of natural death to harvest them for the Chinese market so that this art form may continue and flourish.

And the oversight of the welfare of the herds must be extremely well guarded against the poachers.

It might be best to pay them a fair stipend to desist in their illegal killings of these creatures. This same idea may be offered to Nippon vis a vis its illegal killing of whales.
