Politicians - It is a GIVEN that they are EXPERTS AT ECONOMIC MANAGEMENT OF THEIR NATIONS.

One of the most difficult things in life is to see the evidence before ones eyes and to embrace it and then to act on it.

Raise the flag: for KING and COUNTRY
                        for the DEFENSE OF THE NATION
                        for the DEFENSE OF THE FAITH
                        for our POLITICAL PART
                        for the VICTORY OF CAPITALISM
                        for DEATH TO COMMUNISM

and such ilk

and it matters not a tit that the evidence  will be horrendous in its costs to our wives, children, parents, but we all be like a herd of cows on stampede we rush on, even if it is over a cliff.  

All politicians are like that cliff. At election time we like a herd of cows, we vote them in with no sound metrics by which to evaluate them, choose them; and no sound constitutional metrics to tramline them in their governance of us.

Once they are elected, like a herd of cows, we follow them over the cliff of economic debt and woe.

All generalizations only have their validity if you can posit an exception to vindicate the rule. So, what is the exception to this generalization. 

It is the city state of Singapore.
