The clergy is NOT the church. It is the laity.
So, since all the property the church, i.e. property of the laity, is conventiently in priestly names, the arch-priest now sells the property of the laity, to get the money to pay for this settlement that he agreed to.
Now, finally parishoners feel teeny weeny tweaks of anger that they have to foot the bill for priestly shenanigans.
Because these priest violated the children of their parish, the closest analogy I can think of is a group of lay paedophiles who have agreed to pay compensation to their victims; and to get the money to do so they are taking the money out of the piggy banks of these very children that they sodomised to pay their compensation.
There is an awaful smell of crookery going on here.
Their counter argument is that they have to do this to right a wrong.
OK!
But you cannot do another wrong to right the wrong you have done.
Additionally, the arch-priest never got the informed consent of the church to agree to sell its property. Without this consent, what he is doing can be described as robbery, a.k.a. pillaging.
