Europe's Eastern flank is Russia's western border

Following the collapse of the USSR, the eastern European nations rushed to join the European Union.
And the top hegemon, mindlessly skewered these same eastern European nations to join NATO.
And NATO is the multilateral alliance whose aim is to be able to attack Russia if necessary.
