The Aral Sea is for all practical purposes a desert. This event was subsequent to Stalin's measures to siphon water to promote the agriculture of the Central Asian States of Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan and others.
The people of the Aral Sea were just left abandoned.
The same thing happened to the Mexican people of the Colorado River Delta after the US dammed the river for its hydro and water needs of its agriculture.
