In Singapore, you can appeal your conviction to a higher court.
If you do and you fail in your appeal, the sentence is automatically increased.
When you get to the Highest Court and your appeal fails, the Highest Court will impose the final addition for your sentence.
They do this in Singapore because they want people to know that you do not f_ _k with the judicial system with the idea that somehow your lawyer can get away with it and save your miserable hide.
