What does this tell you?

This is utterly unbelievable:

What does it tell you about the US in this matter?

It can be that the US commanders in the field are in their thinking:
                                          1. utterly naive
                                          2. virginaly innocent 
                                          3. very simplistic 

On thing is for sure. They lack the foresight and depth of thinking about issues of race, culture, loyalty and religious zeal.

The also have fantastic presuppositions about themselves.
