In Chinese contemporary history, the People's Liberation Army, PLA, holds a very special place in their hearts and in their mythology. It was the army led by Mao Ze-dong in the Long March and it was the same army that in the end halted the Imperial Nippon Army and then fought the civil war that saw the U.S./CIA sponsored Chiang Kai-Shek off to Taiwan.
