How to be unrealistic and love it.

I have lived to know the greatness of British Imperial power and I am a beneficiary of it and for which i will be eternally grateful.
However I have also seen its power slip into a slow but inevitable decline.
There is a body of British Euro skeptics who wish to see Britain detache from the E.U.
In this process there was recently a side show in which the British PM tried to block the nominee to  be the next President of the E.U. He was so out of sync with how the powers that be in the EU felt about this nominee that not this has happened:

Britain in the EU would be one of its most powerful leaders.
If she leaves the EU, she will be truly alone because there will be no European power that will link with it.
The price of this splendid isolation would, to put it very mildly, be very costly to Britain.
