Here is one area that can have bad consequences:
If the Chinese Navy blew this Philipines ship off the water it would be agrression to the level of possible war.
In such an instance, the U.S. will step into the conflict because of its treaty obligation to defend the Philipines against the bully that is China.
Now, won't it be fun to see the fight between the most powerful nation in the whole world versus the new boy on the block?
